How to write about Africa – reframing storytelling and centering equity

We recently launched our Ethical Storytelling Handbook How to Write About Africa in 8 Steps for storytellers and organisations to use as a tool when confronted by ethical challenges in the field.

To many people, Africa is still the broken continent, whose people lack agency and are dependent on others. Today there is a growing awareness that this story does not fully represent Africa, that there is a socio-economic impact to the persistent frames of poverty, poor leadership, corruption, conflict, and disease that have created stereotypical narratives about Africa. But for us to change the narrative about Africa, we need to change not just the stories we tell about the continent, but how we tell them. An ethical approach to storytelling is one way to balance the story. This webinar looks at how to apply ethical principles to the work of raising awareness about development issues on the continent.
