Africa No Filter Presents: Another scramble for Africa? Unpacking narratives on Business in Africa

We were, and that’s why we’re starting a conversation to unpack narratives about business in Africa. Join our webinar on Thursday, 24th March at 1pm GMT, 2pm WAT, 3pm SAST, 4pm EAT to highlight insights we found when we analysed 750 million news articles in African and global media about business in Africa for The Business in Africa Narrative Report.

The report highlights the fact that 70% of business stories about Africa are dominated by foreign powers like China, France, Russia, the US and the UK, among seven other frames that also overemphasise the role of governments while underrepresenting women, youth and entrepreneurship. Yet as the report also shows, Africa claims the top three spots in the Mastercard Index for the highest concentration of women business owners globally. It also has the youngest population in the world.

Join our panellists as they unpack why it matters that current narratives associated with business in Africa are dangerously distorted, 35 trends that point to Africa being a booming business and investment destination and how journalists can reframe narratives.

Moderator: Natasha Kimani, Research and Media Programme Lead at Africa No Filter

Research and Analysis: Richard Addy, co-founder of AKAS international audience strategy consultancy.

Our panellists:

1. Bogolo Kenewendo - Global economist and former Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry in Botswana.

2. Yasmin Kumi - Founder and chief executive of Africa Foresight Group.

3. Richard Addy - Report author and co-founder of AKAS, an award-winning international consultancy.

It’s a timely conversation as Africa and the world recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, 24th March at 1pm GMT, 2pm WAT, 3pm SAST, 4pm EAT.
