The New Humanitarian gathered regional and international media that cover humanitarian crises and the Global South to host a convening on decolonising Western media coverage of the Global South on the sidelines of the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy. The event was attended by 22 people from a hand-picked group of international media that cover the Global South, regional media representatives from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, academics who study global journalism, and media funders. The convening addressed several key questions, including why international news needs to be decolonised, what decolonisation seeks to achieve and how to move this agenda forward. The convening - a closed event - was a starting point for a broader initiative by The New Humanitarian focused on decolonising international journalism.
