Description

Mutua is a Kenyan photographer and a graduate Architect from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (J.K.U.A.T). Mutua’s style of photography uses his architectural eye to capture Architecture, cityscapes & landscapes in Nairobi and beyond

In 2014, in collaboration with David ‘Blackman’ Muthami and UN-Habitat, Mutua used his photography of urban spaces to showcase the cityscapes/landscapes of Nairobi to change mindsets of people in Africa about their cities.

More recently, in collaboration with Joe Were a photographer, Lulu Kitolo a graphic designer and Josh Kisamwa documentary filmmaker, Mutua traveled to 13 cities in 10 countries in Southern Africa taking portraits of different urban and city landscapes to “to disrupt the narrative about urban Africa.”

This project entitled “Unscrambling Africa” hopes to uncover how we use, define and relate with our spaces in Africa; to explore African architecture; to discover how different or similar the cultures of urbanity are in different African cities, and to share this information so that more of us can gain an insight into what stories African cities behold.

Mutua has won the pioneer BAKE (Bloggers Association of Kenya) AWARD for best photography blog in Kenya and was nominated for the International CSS Design Award based in the United States, putting both Kenya and Africa on the Map in photography. His photos have been used by BBC Media, African Digital Art, and other avenues.
